Blog #3

First of all, Estella's realization comes from the time she and her adoptive mother get into a fight. It began when the two of them were sitting next to each other with their hands intertwined when Estella lets go of Miss Havisham's hand. Miss Havisham is suddenly taken aback and thinks that Estella might be sick of her. They keep on arguing and soon Estella soon realizes that Miss Havisham never gave her any love. Instead all Miss Havisham did was force Estella to seek revenge on all males because of a bad event in her past. She is ruining her adoptive daughters life for her own silly reason. Estella realizes that she shouldn't be this way to men and that she shouldn't have put up with this nonsense for so long.
Pip also has a similar realization. He first realizes it when he finds out that the convict is his benefactor. He is shocked and not at all happy with it. He expected it to be Miss Havisham all along and thought that that would help him be with Estella. However now that its not her, he realizes that he gets no reward. He also feels terribly for Joe. When Pip really thinks about it he betrayed Joe, and it turned out to be only for the convict. It started in the beginning of the book when the convict gets Pip to steal from Joe. Then it happened again when Pip leaves due to the fortune the convict gives him. He feels horrible and feels as if he lost someone really close to him for no good reason.

  2. I think you are on the right track with this blog but not quite there yet. You don’t use any textual evidence to support you reasoning which is very important when making a solid argument. You could prove your point even further by saying that when Estella realizes she was acting the way Ms. Havisham wanted her to act and not being herself she states, "I am what you have made me. Take all the praise, take all the blame; take all the successes, take all the failure; in short, take me.(pg 304)" and that is when she finally comes to the realizations of her personality and well being. All that you are stating is true but you just need to use a little bit of evidence to support your ideas. Estella does realize that Ms. Havisham doesn’t really love and that she is just using her to seek revenge on every male, we can see this when Ms. Havisham tells Estella to break Pips heart all the way in the beginning of the book. And when Estella realizes she doesn’t want to be this way and that she wants to love and be loved she states, "The success is not mine, the failure is not mine, but two together make me.(306)" Estella now realizes that she can get passed all her hardships with Ms. Havisham and love someone. She is sick of being that snobby little girl and she wants to be a polite young women.
Pip also realizes things about his upbringing like you state. He is very shocked when He finds out that the Convict is his benefactor and that Ms. Havisham isn’t. He then realizes that he has no future with Estella and states, “Miss Havisham's intentions towards me, all a mere dream; Estella not designed for me; I only suffered in Satis House as a convenience, a sting for the greedy relations, a model with a mechanical heart to practice on when no other practice was at hand; those were the first smarts I had.(pg. 323)" With this then he also becomes very disgusted with himself for treating Joe the way he did." I could never, never, never undo what I had done."(p.323) When the convict tells him this news he isn't grateful at all but more disappointed and ashamed in away. With this news he finally realizes that dreams don't always come true.
